Flower of the Month January: Carnation & Snowdrop

The carnation is native to many countries across the Mediterranean region, including Greece, Italy, and Spain, where it has been grown and used for thousands of years. Scientifically known as Dianthus Caryophyllus, the carnation’s genus name is thought to translate to ‘divine flower’ from the Greek words dios and anthos. Originally only found in a pink-purple color, carnations can now be found in almost every color through breeding and the production of cultivars.

The other January flower is the Snowdrop. With radiant white flowers that dangle languorously from its slender green stem, they are like elegant beads of snow. Snowdrops belong to the Galanthus group of flowers, which contains about 20 different species, with Galanthus nivalis being the most popular. Symbolizing innocence, purity, and hope, this birth month flower grows well during winter in cooler areas of North America.
